MUNDO DO CINEMA: Dicas de filmes e DVDs

“THE AMERICAN” *

George Clooney has been busy since last year’s three brilliant characters. He played a paranormal soldier, a fantastic thief and a cynical lonely executive.

Unfortunately his new persona is a big cheater. In the opening he’s a hitman in a bloody job gone wrong. As he arrives in Italy for his next assignment, he claims to be the last. Fine. Problem is: his character spends the narrative sleeping around with hookers, taking thoughtful strolls with a priest, setting up the gun and discussing the details with furious boss on a phone booth. He also surprises the audience waking up, scared, by any sort of noise.

Shot with elegance, there’s a charming sense of art, thanks to the director’s efforts, but it isn’t what they’ve sold. Neither was the intention of a psychological thriller. Pretentious, it drowns on its own beauty, and instead of entertaining, it only tries hard to convince the audience, that’s all about the protagonist, and what’s going on in his mind (and pants).

ALSO SHOWING

What makes a great action film? A beefy hero, lots of guns, chopped bodies, exploding environments and hot chicks. Right? Well, Rodriguez’s “MACHETE” has plenty of that in hallucinating doses. The wise plot gathers immigrants, politicians and druglords, to serve up a debaucherous and extremely violent  guilty pleasure.

SEPTEMBER DVD’S WASHOUT

Full moon illuminates Autumn. Cranky men: Douglas is “SOLITARY MAN” dealing with a personal crisis. An elderly escapes from nursing home to claim back his property in magnificent “EVENING SUN”. The government wants “IRON MAN” superpowers, but he’s enjoying worldwide fame. While “ROBIN HOOD” is struggling to survive several traps (including recession), “PRINCE PERSIA” is playing with a mystical sand in the desert. Greedy business folks argue, sleep and betrayal each other, aiming for “BOOGIE WOOGIE”, a high-valuable painting. An artist is creating “(UNTITLED)”, and seducing a plasticaholic art dealer. A soccer fanatic is “LOOKING FOR ERIC” for practice and marital counseling. Avoid getting close to “HOME”, a weird family breakdown, and runaway from depressing “HELEN”. Charming sexy people can’t save “JULIET” or “KILLERS” from boredom. Latifah is heart-warming as a nurse in “JUST WRIGHT”. Oscar Winner “SECRET IN THEIR EYES” sets up a puzzle of murder and political corruption, offering a mind blowing climax. And brutality finds a new face in grizzly “MY SON MY SON”. As a mysterious lunatic, Michael Shannon terrifies everyone. Beware.
