FOXCATCHER ***

When opportunity knocks, one must be ready for the challenges and temptations that will come along. A humble and solitaire wrestler seems to be satisfied, with his routine of training in his brother’s gym. As he’s preparing for any competition, he isn’t aware of what’s waiting for him when the phone rings. A wealthy, mysterious man, who leads the team from the title, aiming to officially represent the US in the Olympics, invites him over to his mansion, in order to get familiarized with the training center and that arises on him an ambitious perspective for success. The opportunity taken is a life changing experience, and it will shape him into a new man, drifted on his obsession to become the best in the world, but he will also experience his own decline as an athlete and as a person. Based on the shocking real story of the Wrestling team that represented the US in 1988’s Seoul Olympics, Bennett Miller’s somber drama brings revealing performances by the entire cast, which is the greatest attribute in this flick: Steve Carell plays the ambiguous billionaire who shows a bizarre behavior of buying anyone he needs to accomplish his goal and also tries hard to please his ill mother, played by a quiet Vanessa Redgrave, appearing in two small scenes confined to a wheelchair, but carrying a highly dramatic participation; Channing Tatum delivers another fine performance in his progressive career, as the main toy in this game, divided by his integrity, his brotherly connection, and the dangerous pleasures of privilege such as greed, self-sufficiency and drugs; his impressive performance express the winning wrestler inside of him, fighting to put himself together. It’s also interesting to note Tatum’s latest choices, playing young men fighting against drugs, such as “Magic Mike”, the “Jump Street” series, and now, as Mark Schultz, an athlete sunk in drug-addiction. And then, there’s the incredible Mark Ruffalo, the strongest player here, as the ferocious, decisive coach and brother Dave. His character is the mentor for both men, the millionaire who needs to capture the glorious feeling of being a champion, and the brother who still acts like he’s a child in search of guidance and protection, and who’s incredibly talented but is trapped in his misguided attempts to reach accomplishment. Director Miller demonstrates perfect coordination with the actors and the unpredictable material, and accuracy on the details of his sports-tragedy tale, depicting family issues, moral and values, through elements found on these three different characters suffering from their own illusions.

A fine Documentary that recounts the story of Joe Sarno, the successful provocateur director of semi-pornographic films in the 70’s, known as the ‘Bergman’ of soft-porn, his long-time collaboration with his devoted wife, his connection to Sweeden, the prejudice of family members and society, his influence and the desire of making his final film, before his death. The film is told through his own experiences, mostly narrated by his wife, and through renowned directors and film specialists who passionately examine his legacy. (On DVD by Film Movement)
