Love After Love: Star Andie MacDowell gives a tour-de-force performance in enchanting ensemble drama

The Oscar nominated actress will be in-person to discuss the project at IFC Center in New York City on Thursday and Friday.

By Roger Costa- Andie MacDowell, the star of “Four Weddings and A Funeral” and “Groundhog Day” is at her best in “Love After Love”, a new, efficient drama coming to theaters this weekend via IFC Films. She plays an accomplished middle aged woman who goes on a journey in search of pleasure and fulfillment after her husband dies. Both of her two adult sons are also experiencing the same dilemmas, going through complicated relationships themselves.

Andie, who will be 60 in a few weeks, looks fabulously sexy and mature, conceiving a dramatically-charged, ambiguous, contemplative personification with perfect timing and affecting expressions. Chris O’Dowd, an actor often comfortable in comedic roles, gives a star-turn performance here, as the problematic young son who is about to get married but cannot leave his mistress. The grieving has a created an urgent effect of abandon and hopelessness on the family, leading them to deeply self-investigate the meaning of their lives and the importance of romantic partnership. Writer-Director Russell Harbaugh’s feature debut showcases him as a promising filmmaker.

Only a handful of contemporary American filmmakers have the same sensibility and potential. He crafts this enchanting ensemble drama with elegance and accuracy as he unveils his characters’ wounded emotions, supported by the beautifully observational cinematography by Chris Teague, and the stunning piano score by veteran Oscar winner composer David Shire. As he observes this family’s reactions toward death, marriage, loyalty and love,  Harbaugh created a delicate, deeply moving and thoughtful tale about the inner strength of letting go the inevitable and embracing a reboot.
