Ailey II, the celebrated and talented “baby” company to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, returns to Ailey Citigroup Theater (405 West 55th St. 9th Avenue, Manhattan) for their annual season from March 26 thru April 6. Gathering some of the most passionate and energized emerging dancers and choreographers, Ailey II is dedicating this season to the life and legacy of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison.
Among the highlights, “Divining” by Jamison, the Premiere of Houston Thomas’ “Down the Rabbit Hole”, the Premiere of Francesca Harper’s “Luminous” and the jubilant and percussion-fueled “Streams” by Alvin Ailey. Stacey Kent and Danilo Caymmi and uniting forces for a unique tribute to Tom Jobim at The Town Hall, 123 West 43rd Street, right in Times Square, Manhattan. Honoring the legacy of the great Jobim and his compositions, such as the worldwide popular “Girl From Ipanema”, the concert will be a harmonious and elegant celebration of Brazilian music and Bossa Nova heritage. Part of the series The Future of Film is Female, the Museum of Modern Arts, 11 West 53rd Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues) presents “Girls to the Front-Nineties and Now”, showcasing the work of female directors who led the independent film movement of the 1990’s and how it influenced contemporary filmmakers. Through March 30, the series will screen the Swiss Award-winner “Reinas (Queens)”, a Restored copy of the cult classic “Go Fish”, Tina Krause’s “Limbo” (with Krause in person for an introduction), 1993’s Gothic Dark comedy “Gift” directed by Casey Niccoli and Perry Farrell and featuring a live conversation with Niccoli and the Australian transgressive meta-horror “T-Blockers” directed by Alice Mayo MacKay. The best of comedy is coming to Newark’s NJPAC, 1 Center Street. On Sunday, March 30, at 7pm catch the iconic DANE COOK as he lands on Prudential Hall with his outrageous jokes and hilarious stories. On Friday, April 4 the wisely observational Paula Poundstone brings some of her most fun insights to interact with the audience and takes on her fan-favorite book “The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness.” On Saturday, April 5th, Kristin Key comes armed with her “Lesbian Army Tour” and on Sunday, the 6th it’s mortuary business owner and comedy sensation Shuler King to command the stage with his contagious energy, comparable to Bernie Mac.
