On path to celebrate 3 decades of career among the most influential and popular musicians in black America, turned actor and showbiz man, Tyrese Gibson has also gained worldwide fame in blockbuster hits such as the “Fast and Furious” and “Transformers” franchises. Since his debut single, “Nobody Else” in 1998, Tyrese has consolidated himself as a unique and powerhouse R&B performer. His last album, “Beautiful Pain” brings some heartbreaking songs and irresistibly sensual melodies, and he will perform some of those (as well as his popular hits) on Sunday, April 27th at 7pm at NJPAC, 1 Center Street, Newark. Trisha Brown Dance Company returns to The Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue) with an impressive and metaphorical program that celebrates their new movement form, Trisha Brown’s Unstable Molecular Structure. The style has been an influential force among professionals and choreographers, and the show explores the sensuality and transformational aspects of it. The program includes “Opal Loop”, “Son of Gone Fishing” and “Time Again” a new commission by Australian choreographer Lee Serle, in collaboration with Colombian visual artist Mateo López, and in partnership with Rolex. Known for her strong chords and charismatic stage presence, the versatile Brazilian-born, NYC-based singer Ana Fernandez will perform a special tribute to legendary Elza Soares as part of a Mother’s Day celebration hosted by Drom, 85 Avenue A, Manhattan. Ana has just returned from a tour season in Rio and Sao Paulo where she performed the tribute at both cities’ Blue Note Jazz. She is also one of the most active Brazilian-Jazz singers in the big apple, performing weekly shows at venues such as Berimbau, Fasano, Art Galleries and others. Sunday May 11 at 6:30pm. Tickets $25. Presented in collaboration with African Film Festival, Inc., Film at Lincoln Center presents the annual New York African Film Festival, now in its 32nd edition. Located at 165 65th Street Broadway, FLC hosts some of the most exciting and bold contemporary African-diaspora themed features and docs, spanning cultures, experiences and countries. This year’s theme, “Fluid Horizons: A Shifting Lens on a Hopeful World,” honors the resilience of African youth and the forebearers who paved the way for them. Among the highlights, “Freedom Way” a dramatic political thriller from Nigeria, “Black Tea” a multi-racial romance set in Chocolate City, Mali filmmaker Fatou Cissé’s latest feminist tale “Furu” and Berlin-selected sensation “Rising Up at Night” from Congo. Starting on May 11 and on view through September 27, 2025, the Museum of Modern Arts, 11 West 53rd Street presents “Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers”, an exhibition showcasing Nature Studies, containing 46 botanical drawings by Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862–1944). Never seen before, the exhibition explores the artist’s experiments and relationship with the natural world. Conceived between the spring and summer of 1919 and 1920, the Nature Studies portfolio introduces to modern viewers the wonders of Sweden’s flora and showcases the artist’s passionate botanical vision. organized by Jodi Hauptman, The Richard Roth Senior Curator, Department of Drawings and Prints, with Kolleen Ku, Curatorial Assistant, and Chloe White, Louise Bourgeois Fellow, Department of Drawings and Prints. As part of the 3rd NY Brazilian Film Series, the writer Julissa Silva will launch her poetry breakthrough book, “Blood on The Pedestal” on Sunday May 18th at 5pm at Cinema Village, 22 East 12th Street Manhattan. With a masters’ degree from Cambridge and Oxford, this passionate writer and political activist explores the feminine universe and empowerment in her words, using Gothic elements to enhance the sensuality and mysterious plots.
