The 3rd NY Brazilian Film Series took place on Sunday May 18 at Cinema Village in Manhattan, gathering over 150 people to a sell-out, fun-packed cultural event.

The main attraction was the NY Premiere of “Luiz Melodia- Within the Heart of Brazil”, the beautiful, one-person doc directed by Alessandra Dorgan.

Hosted by journalist Karine Rezende, the 3rd NYBFS celebrated the work of Luiz Melodia as a composer and the importance of female empowerment, featuring a diverse line up of performances.

“We are here tonight to celebrate the healing power of arts”, said Roger Costa, the founder of NYBFS during the opening set, which included a live percussion performance by Everton Isidoro and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s artist Dandara Veiga’s luminous dance set.

Fashion designer Mercia Braga presented her latest collection made with art crafts from her native Northeast Brazil, dressed by gorgeous models.

Another highlight of the evening was author and immigration advocate Julissa Silva’s poetry book release, and floral designer Teresa Pollard’s workshop and inspiring art show.

The audience was treated to typical food and drinks such as Caipirinha, Guarana, and salgados (Brazilian pastries) powered by Altas Horas Lanches, as well as prizes generously donated by NYBFS’s partners. That included a pair of tickets to see shows at The Joyce Theater and another pair of tickets for NJPAC, valuing almost $500 dollars in tickets. They also were gifted 15 beautiful flower bouquets designed by Teresa Pollard and 30 tote-bags exclusively designed by artist Tarik Mendes, and 12 NYBFS t-shirts.

The evening was wrapped up by the electrifying music and beats of BATALA NY, the female-led drumming group and multi-talented dancer Angelica Cassimiro’s stunning samba show.

Next: The 4th edition of the NY Brazilian Film Series will feature the NY Premiere of “MILTON BITUCA NASCIMENTO” on Sunday, November 2nd at 5pm.
