The house of Jazz on 60th Street and Broadway will present the master of percussion and Brazilian rhythms Cyro Baptista at their elegant Rose Theater on November 7 and 8 at 7:30pm. Cyro is among the greatest and most inventive jazz musicians in the world, and he hails from Brazil. Travelling the world with his contagiously vibrant music which he makes out of anything literally, Cyro is turning 75 at the peak of his artistry collaborating with other great names and engaged in social movements, including bringing music to schools around the country. He will be joined by special guests and remarkable music partners, Trey Anastasio on Friday night and Cassandra Wilson on Saturday night. GALLIM presents the world premiere of MOTHER by acclaimed choreographer and artistic director Andrea Miller at The Joyce Theater, 175 Eighth Avenue with performances November 5-9. The new work explores the origins, mechanisms, and uncertain path of an imagined universe. Set in the primeval present where history only lies ahead, every shift of the dancers synthesizes the essential elements for the gestation of all life. The fragile sequences of survival go on. Through their signature virtuosity and searing movement, the GALLIM dancers exude traces of genesis. MOTHER features an original electronic dance score by Frédéric Despierre, with surreal costume design by Orly Anan, and evocative lighting design by Vincent Vigilante continuing a long history of collaboration with these brilliant artists. The annual “best of the year” series The Contender returns this November with the Museum of Modern Art’s Film Department picks on the most important cinematic experiences of the current year. The line-up includes Gus Van Sant in person on Opening Night, Thursday, November 7th, to chat about his latest, “Dead Man’s Wire”, American auteur Ricard Linklater’s “Blue Moon” starring an astounding Ethan Hawke, also in attendance on Wednesday, the 19th and “Grand Tour” (pictured), the eccentric journey of a runaway groom envisioned by Portuguese master Miguel Gomes, winner of the Director Award in Cannes, screening on the 26th. As Milton Nascimento, one of the most celebrated living artists in Brazil, turns 82, the fall edition of the NY Brazilian Film Series celebrates his influence in music and activism, featuring the NY Premiere of the Grammy nominated documentary about his final tour in London, Belo Horizonte, Rio and New York.

“Milton Bituca Nascimento” is directed by Flavia Moraes and narrated by Fernanda Montenegro.
