The exuberant “Complexions Contemporary Ballet” returns to The Joyce Theater, 175 Eighth Avenue, to celebrate its 31st season under the direction of Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. Formed by spectacular, athletic dancers and known for its signature fusion of technical precision, raw energy, and soulful storytelling, the company presents an electrifying program featuring new works by Rhoden, rising guest choreographer Houston Thomas, and Co-Associate Artistic Director Joe Gonzalez. The 2-week engagement includes the premiere of “Midnight Riff”, Rhoden’s vibrant tribute to the legendary women of jazz, and “Retro Suite”, a retrospective of Rhoden’s iconic repertory. The electrifying music of Jimi Hendrix will be revived by Jazz guitar master Stanley Jordan on Saturday, November 22 at 7:30pm at Newark’s NJPAC. As part of the annual TD James Moody Jazz Festival, Jordan, a 4-time Grammy nominee renowned artist will pay tribute to the blues-rock legend whose influential force was predominant in his decision to become a musician. The Museum of Modern Arts (11 West 53rd Street) just opened a new exhibition made of large modernism paintings, sculptures, ceramics, prints and other mediums to celebrate the legacy and influential artistry of Cuban born, African/Chinese artist Wifredo Lam. On view on the third floor now thru April 11th, the compilation explores the history of Afro-Caribbean relations and the connection to other cultures. Paintings of landscapes, random encounters, mystical figures, folklore and daily observations are constant subjects in his work. “Wifredo Lam: When I Don’t Sleep, I Dream” is the first retrospective in the country to feature the full trajectory of Lam’s remarkable vision. The captivating music of Anthony Cheung has been described as gritty, inventive, and wonderfully assured. His work reveals an interest in the ambiguity of sound sources and shifting transformations of tuning and timbre.
