@The Joyce Theater
The phenomenal Philadelphia’s BalletX is performing at The Joyce Theater through Sunday, September 28 and their 20TH anniversary show is simply vibrant and exuberant. Under the artistic direction of Christine Cox, it opens with “Scales on the Wings of the Butterfly”, a visually stunning pile of bodies displayed on stage as the large team of dancers embrace themselves in a giant collective demonstration of their commitment to the art of dancing.

Colorful costumes and futuristic techno music enhanced the vitality and vibrancy of the opening act, which was highlighted by the dancers’ incredible ability, endurance and their phenomenal athletics. An enchanting duet followed, “Two People in Love Never Shake Hands”, enticing romanticism and tragedy, beautifully performed with dramatic tunes. And then, an emotional force took control of the room as a solo was performed to the sound of Tom Jobim and Vinicius’s “Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar” (sung in both Spanish and Portuguese with a special treat by Caetano Veloso).

It was a delicate, invigorating poetic piece. The final act, “Sojourner” brought in a group of sensational jazz musicians, blending Afro Latin influences with American Jazz. The celebratory piece evoked martial arts, capoeira and other forms, in an enthusiastic collective dance. BalletX performs through Sunday, September 28 at The Joyce Theater, 175 Eighth Avenue, on the corner of 19th Street. (Photo credit: Scott Serio for BalletX).Tickets start at $10.
