They stumble on floating pieces of wood, at first just something lost in the sea, but actually, it’s the film’s message approaching its intent. The film focus on the challenges young Fillipo must face in the process of losing his naivety and reaching maturity.

He seems happy with his ordinary life, living on a touristic island, helping his grandfather provide for themselves; his mother still mourns the death of his father, lost at sea, and persuades him to move out to the city in search of different things; his uncle also puts up efforts trying to pull out of him, a grown man. Everyone is doing whatever they think is the best for Fillipo, except Ernesto, who accepts life the way it is and has replaced Fillipo for the absence of his lost son. But it’s actually his most intimate element of approach, the ocean, that will teach his high-tempered mood a few lessons and how to reach manhood and decide for himself what shape should his personality have.

When they prepare to host the tourists for the season they only plan to gather money for hard days. But once they are faced with clandestine African refugees drowning in the ocean, they do as they were supposed to, rescuing them, bringing the most important aspect in this spectacular study on human values and compassion, compilled by Italian director Emanuele Crialese. Everyone is affected by the incident and Ernesto is forced to help a pregnant woman, giving her shelter. Then, Crialese surprises the audience, turning things around, getting its tragic tone to alert amidst human brutality and intolerance, authority oppression, social and political differences, economic crisis and also questions the natural right of every human being, of claiming their existence in what we call home, that’s the reason for the title which means a firm ground.

Crialese creates a small masterpiece about equality, with stupendous performances and a satisfying balance of social and family drama, seen through the struggles of the family, but mostly through Fillipo’s. The study of each character is also a great attribute, the way they care and protect each other, and suddenly putting their integrity in test. The look of despair in their faces is heartbreaking, while the tourists enjoy the island, they are facing the most difficult time ever, and as the refugee tells her story, is like a punch in the materialistic beliefs, making us meditate on what really matters in life, the simple things, the joy, the connection between people, nature and also the struggle of everyday. And then we realize, that in fact, everything can get fixed somehow.

“TERRAFERMA” **** Don’t worry everything can get fixed, says Ernesto an aged fisherman to his troubled grandson Fillipo, as he looks hopelessly at his damaged motorcycle.
