There, a family formed of intellectuals and a young son who’s a very talented aspiring musician, lodge an American researcher interested in the head of the house’s ideals. His visit only turns things upside down to young Elio (Timothée Chalamet), first developing a strangely competitive reaction, but then, intensely intrigued by his charming arrogance, surfacing his most intimate desire. Guadagnino once again examines how relationships and encounters shape one’s personality, exploring Elio’s emotions, hormones and expectations with contemplative honesty. As the camera sits there observing the transformations experienced by this young kid, Timothée Chalamet perfectly embodies the details of James Ivory’s screenplay, giving a breakthrough performance, courageous, defying boundaries that easily puts him on top of the list as the Best Actor of the Year. Armie Hammer as Oliver, and Michael Stuhlbarg as the father are also superb in their roles. Beautifully composed and structured with elegance, it has its low points, such as the dragging second part, but overall it is a coherent ambiguous coming-of-age experience that breathes (and belongs) completely through Chalamet’s astonishing, life-changing performance. (A Sony Pictures Classics Release. Full of excitement, Franco gathers many talented comedians, including his own brother Dave, the wonderful Seth Rogen and an impressive Zac Efron, as well as legendary actresses Melanie Griffith, Sharon Stone and Jackie Weaver, to recreate the story behind the midnight-trash-indie-hit “The Room” conceived by mysterious artist Tommy Wiseau. But the film feels like just a mere comedy for adults to see during the Holidays, with no real intentions to impose a “love for the art” statement, focusing only on the story of a weirdo dreamer who had money (and zero talent) to make a senseless movie. Franco is hilarious, indeed, and a complete artist, we all love him, and we know he can do anything very well, but it would be a shame to give him an Oscar for this role, instead of Chalamet or even Gary Oldman’s “heavy make-up and long speeches” in the boring “Darkest Hour”. Awkwardly funny and well crafted, “The Disaster Artist” is worth seeing for its irreverent fresh humor and the brilliance and talent demonstrated in the teamwork. (An A24 Release.
