At 15, Mia joins a group of eccentrics devoted to obscure practices, such as flirting with death and premature sex, only to fuel up her ambitions and ambiguous intentions. As she struggles with acceptance, she is also dealing with a turbulent relationship with parents, and a self-conflict crisis against her hormones; she’s gradually experiencing an aggressive transformation of temper and body, obsessed with instinctive cravings and the surge of mysteriously creepy scars. Her sexual appetite also flourishes, as she tutors herself with porn and slutty attitudes, seeking out to fulfill the essential desire of female liberation. Named Best Film at Zurich Film Festival, and nominated for the 7 main awards at this year’s Swiss Film Prize, first-time Writer-Director Lisa Brühlmann seductively crafts a twisted look at adolescence, an intense exercise of suspense and gruesome horror, that points to issues related to this generation’s perspectives with provocative subtlety. She also extracts vigorously convincing and highly courageous performances by the gorgeous young cast, especially rising star Luna Wedler, in one of the four films she made last year. As the troubled, mysteriously angry and extraordinarily distinct, impulsive Mia, she delivers an intriguingly sexy, bizarre, subversive breakthrough performance. She brilliantly embodies all the topics dominating her character, greed, loss of innocence, sexual uprising, uncontrollable instincts, displaying incredible timing. A versatile performer, she recently won the promising EFP Shooting Star Award at Berlin International Film Festival, and was nominated for the Best Actress prize given by the Swiss Academy, proving she’s ready, and talented enough, for stardom. Structured as a turbulent enigma with a predominant sense of the forbidden and the unknown, Brühlmann scored a unique, and utterly scary tale about self-identity and female empowerment.

SATAN’S SLAVES

A smash hit in Rotterdam, and last year’s Indonesia’s highest grossing film, prolific award-winning director Joko Anwar’s terrifying remake is a shockingly macabre and efficient production, supported by extraordinary techniques and superb acting. A young woman and her family are struggling to maintain her ill mother home, as they are out of cash to pay the Hospital bills. A former, very popular singer in the country, the woman is slowly dying of an uncertain evil possession, while her family runs against the clock to find a cure. She finally rests, but returns to claim her children’s lives, as part of a bizarre pact she had done in the past. Shot with a precise contrast of abstract, enhanced angles, creating an asphyxiating atmosphere by acclaimed cinematographer Ical Tanjung, the film builds up some great chills, and also convincingly examines the family’s grieving and parallel dramas, such as the mute child played by M. Adhiyat (the child actor won the Best Young Performer prize at Festival Film Indonesia, where the film also took 6 other Top Prizes), and the anxiety of the young daughter played by accomplished actress Tara Basro (who also appeared in the director’s previous film, “A Copy of My Mind” an erotic drama that screened at Venice). A chilling, haunting experience, see Anwar’s work before Hollywood puts its hands on it.

BOILED ANGELS: THE TRIAL OF MIKE DIANA

Continuing his documentarian phase, horror-cult director Frank Henenlotter turns his lenses to the controversial true story of the only man who faced jail time because of his art. Mike Diana was arrested, judged and sentenced to, among other penalties “never draw again”, as he was considered a maniac, a serious danger to society after publishing his furiously obscene and hardcore drawings book. His artwork reflects on insanity and sexual fetishes, mostly with aberrational, profane, offensive, bloody depiction of rapes, murders and other crimes, with messages of anger against the system and Catholicism. An accurate account on Mike’s character, enthusiasm and passion for his art, as well as a precise, detailing re-construction of the events, especially how he became a National sensation and how America responded to it, Henenlotter scoops out the controversial material with efficiency, providing scandalous facts. It’s mainly supported by coherent footage editing, harsh images of his work (Mike contributed with original animation on the film), as well as testimonies of Mike himself, attorneys, family members, and professionals devoted to the same artistic passion such as Graphic artist and writer Neil Gaiman, comic cartoonists Peter Bagge and Stephen Bissette. An impressive look at freedom of speech, the right of art creation and form, and the impairments of hypocrisy.

By Roger Costa Showcasing several NYC Premieres of contemporary horror flicks, including experimental, satires, futuristic visions, award-winning productions and international box-office smash hits, the 1st What The Fest!? is a gore-infested feast for fans of the genre and its latest re-inventions.
