Ben Stiler’s latest directorial effort, which he also stars and produces opens this Christmas targeting family audiences, with the modern device as the main subject, introducing the protagonist trying to work on his profile for a dating website. He’s aware he isn’t popular at all, being ignored by the other users, so he seeks advise in order to get “winks” and become noticed by a co-worker he’s got a crush on. The customer attendant tells him that modern society are urged to share their social and outgoing activity with the world, and that’s the aspect people find to become attracted or interested in each other. In order to fill out the blank spaces, and motivated by his day-dreaming escapism behavior, he imagines wild situations through the windows of Time Magazine, where he works, and eventually stepping outside to see the world, going on an adventure to fulfill his lack of social interests and spiritual activity, and the requests on the website. Steve Conrad’s adventurous and high-lifted screenplay focuses on Mitty’s imagination as he’s constantly travelling on his own, envisioning absurd situations, and struggling in search of self-esteem and courage to leave his working routine behind and actually embrace the risks he’s been dreaming on. Kristen Wiig plays Mitty’s love interest, a loveable and charming office girl, whom anyone would like to date, and she’s also responsible for a good amount of jokes. Stiler is a good comedian and competent performer but he seems lost when getting behind the cameras. The film is able to discuss its message of a man who needs to get out of the office to understand the meaning of life, and rescue the time he’s been wasting, a perfect choice for the Holiday season with a PG Rating, but children won’t get it and adults will take it ‘too childish’. Despite it’s well produced, and occasionally hilarious, supported by a fine writer on board, funny players and dazzling visual and scenarios, the process is kind of dragging, and the irrelevance of his continuously trips into imaginary becomes exhausting. It’s an elegant fun and fast ride about wealthy people who don’t know how to spend their earnings neither how to connect to people, that could be seen in between breaks from shopping, but its presumptuous and tiresome humor puts it as one of the most noticeable wasted films of 2013.

THE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

Despite they’re films made to entertain for an hour and then be forgotten, I’m glad there are two titles playing this season with the context of the real meaning of Christmas.
