Fort Gansevoort had just opened\u00a0Memories of Puerto Rico<\/em>, a new online exhibition featuring a selection of paintings by Nick Quijano, organized in collaboration with critically acclaimed Puerto Rican author, filmmaker, and DJ, Bobbito Garcia.<\/p>\n

Memories of Puerto Rico<\/em>\u00a0is Fort Gansevoort’s first exhibition with Quijano, who was born in New York and is based in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Crafting a creative philosophy based upon his response to the local context and identity as a citizen of the Caribbean, Quijano experimented with various mediums, from collage and printmaking, to furniture design and assemblage, before devoting himself exclusively to painting.<\/p>\n

The energetic culture or Puerto Rico takes center stage in Quijano’s art. Baila la calle (de noche, baila la calle de\u00a0<\/em>d\u00eda<\/em>)\u00a0(Dance night and day)\u00a0<\/em>(2014) and\u00a0El Encuentro (Rendzvous)\u00a0<\/em>(2020) incorporate two of the artist’s central themes: music and dance. The former painting portrays a couple dancing hand in hand on a city street, with the pavement beneath their feet mirroring their lively rhythm.\u00a0El Encuentro<\/em>\u00a0captures the allure of an environment animated by music, focusing on a couple’s tentative foray into a crowded disco. Merengue and bolero\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 two styles of music and dance that enjoy paramount popularity in Puerto Rico \u2013 are depicted as catalysts for unity among members of the community \u2013 vehicles through which the collective and intimate are experienced.<\/p>\n

\u2b50<\/strong>The Lim\u00f3n Dance Company<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Lim\u00f3n Dance Company returns to Kaatsbaan for a four week residency that culminates with a virtual performance featuring three dances: a new work by choreographer Chafin Seymour and two of Lim\u00f3n’s masterpieces,\u00a0The Moor’s Pavane<\/em>\u00a0(1949) and\u00a0There is a Time<\/em>\u00a0(1956).<\/p>\n

The residency will also offer Lim\u00f3n’s Home Edition V, an online training dance program that provides participating students workshops, including exclusive access to Company class, rehearsals, a behind-the-scenes streaming event, and a ticket to the Company’s performance.<\/p>\n

The Company’s performance showcases two dances by Jos\u00e9 Lim\u00f3n alongside a brilliant new piece\u00a0Suite Donuts<\/em>\u00a0by emerging choreographer, Chafin Seymour.<\/p>\n

The Moor’s Pavane<\/em>\u00a0incorporates nobility, deceit, seduction, and innocence in a way that could only be achieved in dance. Based on Shakespeare’s “Othello”, Lim\u00f3n created a work that addresses the power of rumor, lies, and racism, motifs that continue to resonate in today’s world.<\/p>\n

The live stream performance from Kaatsbaan Cultural Park’s stage will take place on Saturday, December 19 at 7pm.\u00a0Tickets $25.<\/p>\n
