Summer is here, most of us are vaccinated, and it\u2019s time to enjoy the pleasures of outdoor fun. There\u2019s no better escape from the urban noise than to catch the Ferry on South Street, Lower Manhattan and head to the Island that once resided the Governor and also place for the most secured prison in the country back a century ago. A great, accessible and spacious place for relaxing, hiking, cycling, sports and sightseeing, among other healthy activities, Governors Island hosts events and festivals throughout the season, most of them for free. This weekend visitors will be offered a variety of events such as the special live performance program \u201cJune Rites!\u201d featuring original music by renowned percussionist Mauro Refosco and Baiano instrumentalist and singer Gustavo Di Dalva, a forum discussing topics of social importance hosted by the American Indian Community House, and the indie-music, folk and pop showcase \u201cPorch Stomp\u201d reuniting various artists exploring the city throughout their music, poetry and performances. The park\u2019s annual series of free outdoor events will host an Evening with acclaimed singer Mykal Kilgore. Presented by Joe\u2019s Pub, it will be a night of gospel, soul, R&B and some country with songs from his debut album \u201cA Man Born Black\u201d, the Award-nominated soulful work exploring themes of maturity, loss, faith, and hope. @Joyce Stream<\/strong><\/p>\n

As part of The Joyce Theater\u2019s celebration of Gay Pride Month, the Foundation is streaming on its free platform the Premiere of \u201cAnimals and Angels\u201d a queer love story featuring two female dancers. The project is by #QueerTheBallet under the artistic direction of choreographer Adriana Pierce. Created, filmed and performed by an entire crew of queer artists, the project is a delicate and timely depiction on the development of a relationship, its intimacy and values. Located at 11 West 53rd Street in Manhattan, the Museum of Modern Arts is hosting a special exhibition highlighting the work of innovative Brazilian artists. \u201cFotoclubismo: Brazilian Modernist Photography, 1946-1964\u201d is now on view thru September 26 and brings more than 60 photographs expanding decades in the personal making of images from members of Sao Paulo\u2019s Foto-Cine Clube Bandeirantes, formed mostly by female photographers.
