In search of a better life for his family, a man abandons the humiliations of a miserable salary working in the rice fields of Northern Philippines and moves to the mega city Manila. Hopeful and unaware of the dangers he will meet in the big town, he experiences the injustices of modern capitalism, exploitation and social differences.<\/p>\n

It seems like the industry is not done yet with the subject of immigration, and that would be enough to discard this film awarded at last year\u2019s Sundance with the Award for Best World Dramatic competition. But director Sean Ellis\u2019 striking drama is a powerful tale that depicts the harsh reality of the poor in that country, and the corruptive system of a recent-born capitalism. He tells the story straight forward without manipulation, and it helps the film to create a sense of raw reality. His stylish language, creative shots and touching use of music, prove his efficiency with the material, portraying different aspects of people, city and social behaviors with the commands of a certified story-teller.<\/p>\n

The actors are also superb, giving heart-breaking performances, convincing of their anguish and disturbance. When they are tested by fate with opportunities that would interfere in their beliefs, they experience self-conflict. That brings the audience back to the opening shot, when the protagonist reads a proverb that says \u201cno matter how long the procession is, it always ends at the church\u2019s door\u201d. This quote remains throughout the narrative, pointing to the family\u2019s faith and principles, and also to the system that rules everything.<\/p>\n

But they are not quite surrendering: they persevere and even facing prostitution, violence and a robbery scheme, they struggle to remain truthful to themselves. Long shots of the crowded city, the family\u2019s walk towards uncertainty and real glimpses of social problems, appear as a shocking alert to the issues modern society is challenged with, searching for a brighter horizon for the unfortunates. In this suspenseful and disturbing police drama, a detective is dealing with a consciousness crises after he runs over a boy while driving intoxicated. As he\u2019s trying hard to avoid the penalties of his action and going through moral dilemmas, things heat up when another officer becomes increasingly suspicious of his participation in the accident. Joel Edgerton, Tom Wilkinson and Jai Courtney give fine performances as the leading players in Matthew Saville\u2019s tense examination on law enforcers facing the consequences of their own mistakes.
