A picture is worth a thousand words, but cannot express the details and feelings depicted with words. Both are necessary and while assigning their students to create projects around the battle, we all know where this is going to lead them. What makes this piece directed by Fred Schepisi different from the ordinary love stories that start out as a battle of egos between two strong personalities who don’t get along, is the director’s sharpness and elegant style, entertaining the audience with the material, while he explores the intellectual aspects without pushing it. The subjects are relevant and accessible, creating an enthusiastic interest for what these two characters have in mind, making us witnesses of their creative process, a heartwarming poem and a few astonishing drawings. It also sets the characters in fresh ambience, as she’s dealing with a physical impairment and he’s struggling with his loneliness and alcoholism. The director makes a reference to the good old days when Katherine Hepburn would fight with Cary Grant, demonstrated within the sophisticated narrative of witty dialogs, elegant humor and perfect chemistry between the two stars.

“22 JUMP STREET” ***

Well, everyone needs a form of escapism and there are plenty of reasons to make this sequel a good chance to examine modern issues throughout the irrelevance of two cop buddies determined to capture creepy criminals who are trying to get college students hooked on a new drug. Producers and stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are hilarious making fun of themselves and everyone else, with clever dialogs such as “it looks like a gigantic Cube of Ice” referring to the Chief’s office (played by Ice Cube), and constantly mocking the millionaire results of Hollywood’s sequels, including itself, and their expensive film budgets. Most jokes are heavy and some sound offensive, but audiences love these two brainless investigators and their mission to take drugs away from easy preys on Spring Break seems reasonable and something to cheer for. The result is a sarcastic look on pop culture, on characteristics of the new generation, and on friendship. Many stars make their appearance such as Guru Seth Rogen, and Jillian Bell as a non-stop-talking weirdo College roommate gives a breakthrough comedic performance that will soon give her leading roles. But the formula expires now, a third round is definitely not necessary; Thanks dudes.

ON DVD

Two of the best films of 2014 are already on DVD. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is a wonderful crime fantasy by brilliant filmmaker Wes Anderson, and Palestine’s Oscar nominated “Omar” is a powerful look on human values amidst the war zone.

“WORDS AND PICTURES” *** This surprisingly uplifting romantic comedy brings grand dame of contemporary French cinema Juliette Binoche and charming Academy nominee Clive Owen in fine performances, as an exquisite couple of teachers, an art instructor and an English master, who engage themselves in a battle to prove which is more significant, words or pictures.
