Also paying homage to Max Roach’s centennial, the Jazz House Kids program will feature some of the most exciting and promising new talents from our community, featuring students from East Side and Elizabeth High Schools. Brazilian author Athaide de Moraes will soon celebrate his 97th birthday and for that he is promoting the launch of his latest book, “As Nove Dezenas de Tata e da Marinha”. The event takes place during the NY Brazilian Film Series on Sunday May 19 at 5pm at Cinema Village, 22 East 12th Street in Manhattan. The writer will discuss topics of his book, including memories from his time as a marine, some war stories and overcoming testimonies, while joined by other special guests. At 5pm. Tickets $20. Gathering some bold and stylish Brazilian artists from the East Coast, Expo Brasil NY celebrates our culture and community on Sunday, April 28th from 12pm to 6pm. Among the participants artists this year, fashion designer Mercia Braga brings innovation and plenty of traditional elegance as a highlight exhibitor. Internationally renowned virtuoso guitarist and composer Gil Gutiérrez accompanied by David Rodriguez (Bass) and Robert Stern (violin) form the Gil Gutierrez Trio, performing at Birdland NYC on Friday, May 17, Saturday May 18 and Sunday, May 19, showtimes are 7:00pm and 9:30pm and doors open half hour before showtime. A virtuoso with the nylon string guitar and tres since are 14, Gil Gutiérrez has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Mexican Cultural Institute of the Mexican Embassy in Washington D.C., and at Carnegie Hall accompanied by the New York Pops with Doc Severinsen. Gil tours internationally with guest artists including Arturo Sandoval, Ana Gabriel, Ricardo Arjona, Francisco Céspedes and Pedro Guerrail.
