One of the funniest men working on American showbiz, Deon Cole returns to NJPAC, 1 Center Street, Newark, for a night of outrageous fun and hilarious observations on current issues. An award-winning actor, writer and activist, Cole is currently working on Netflix shows, and has gained fame with key roles in Hollywood hits such as “Barbershop” franchise, “The Color Purple” and “Average Joe” to name a few. Known for his intense portraits of human relations, the beloved and late Oscar-nominated Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski left an incredibly influential art house legacy. Metrograph is celebrating his filmography, marking the 30th anniversary of his death. His massively popular trilogy of colors, “Three Colors: Blue”, “White” and “Red” highlights the retrospective, which includes the entire Dekalog, an anthology of 10 short films made for Polish TV, and some of his early works. Actress Irene Jacob, who worked with him on “Double Life of Veronique” and his last film, “Three Colors: Red” will be in attendance at selected screenings. “The Moral Mazes of Krzysztof Kieslowski” is co-presented with the Polish Cultural Institute New York. Named “a violinist who can do anything” by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Grammy Award-winning violinist, producer, and 2024 MacArthur Fellow Johnny Gandelsman, unites with acclaimed choreographers John Heginbotham, Caili Quan, Jamar Roberts, and Melissa Toogood for Johnny Loves Johann. This New York premiere pairs Johnny’s folk-inspired violin interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s complete Cello Suites with original choreography performed by its creators. Johnny Loves Johann unfolds as a vibrant and intimate conversation with Bach’s music, celebrating the dance and humanity at the heart of these iconic works. The House of Jazz on Broadway, Jazz at Lincoln Center, will celebrate essential blues, as saxophonist Sherman Irby leads “the Birth of the Blues” on April 17th at 7:30 pm and on Saturday, April 18th at 2pm and 7:30 pm. Under his musical direction, vocalists Kenny Washington and Ekep Nkwelle will enchant with their high-energy vocals, accompanied by special guest James Zito on banjo and guitars.
