The sounds of Brazil will be the highlight of Tropical Noise- A Brazilian Celebration, event official selected as part of the North 2 Shore Festival, the largest cultural festival in New Jersey.
On Saturday, June 28 from 7pm to 10pm, Lua Lounge (90 Ferry Street) will host a night of Rock, Afoxe, Samba, Reggae, Hip Hop, Fashion, Poetry and diverse vibes.
Hosted by Roger Costa, the night will kick off with DJ Marcy de Pina spinning the latest sounds from Black movements in Brazil. Fashion designer Mercia Braga will present her latest Carnaval and Sao Joao-style creations, while educator and dancer Neuzy Cirino delivers a special poetry moment honoring African-Brazilian ancestors and traditions.
Music will continue to take the lead as Batala NY, the popular female-led drumming group takes the stage for an electrifying set, followed by Midnight Jack, a rock n’ roll band blending Classics and American beats with Tropical influences. Marvelous works in textiles can be seen on the third floor at MoMA (11 West 53rd Street), with the exhibition “Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction” bringing over 150 diverse objects that examines the links between the familiar art form and abstraction. From elegant to curious, and from strange to mysteriously colorful, each piece grabs the eyes with its beauty and sudden splendor. Gathering works in woven, knotted, and braided fabric, it presents works by Sonia Delaunay, Hannah Hoch, and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Albers and Ed Rossbach, Rosemarie Trockel, Andrea Zittel, and Igshaan Adams. As part of the annual Newark Black Film Festival, now in its 51st edition, the Newark Museum of Art will present the US Premiere of acclaimed Brazilian romantic political-thriller “Akin’s Desert” on Thursday, July 17, at 8pm.
Directed by Award-winning Capixaba filmmaker Bernard Lessa, the film follows the challenges of a Cuban doctor practicing in Brazil when the new-elected Government dismantle the program forcing him to leave the country. The event also features live music, a dance performance and a special Q&A session with the director. Tickets $10.
