Now in its 4th edition, the New York Brazilian Film Series returns to Cinema Village (22 East 12th Street) featuring the NY Premiere of award-winning doc “Milton Bituca Nascimento” directed by Flavia Moraes. The multi-cultural Brazilian celebration includes live music, art show, dance, book launch and a sample of Brazilian gastronomy.
An immersive experience, it opens with Ana Fernandez trio performing a live tribute to Milton Nascimento, accompanied by dancer Angelica Cassimiro’s original choreography work. Emerging mix media artist Madu Moreira will present a live art show, while Cesar de Souza will present his book, “Alem do Alem”. After the film screening, the rhythms of Batala NY will take the stage with their energized drums, and a samba show to wrap the event. Sunday, November 2nd at 4:50pm. Film screening at 5:30pm. As part of the annual James Moody Jazz Festival, the great Cuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa brings his Quarteto Americanos for a night of effervescent Afro-Latin jazz at NJPAC (1 Center Street, Newark), on Saturday, November 8th at 7:30pm. A multi-Grammy nominee, Sosa is known as one of the kings of keyboards skills in the likes of Chick Corea and Chuco Valdes. Sosa will be joined by band members are drummer Josh Jones, bassist Ernesto Mazar Kindelán and Sheldon Brown on saxophone, clarinet and flute. Tickets $58-$82. The French-based Compagnie DYPTIK brings its latest creation, Le Grand Bal, to The Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue @19th Street) from October 28th-November 1st. Under the leadership of choreographers Souhail Marchiche and Mehdi Meghari, the piece is an original hyper-physical work, exploring the versatility and multiple aesthetics of dance. Fueled by Patrick De Oliveira’s music, Le Grand Bal blends Hip-hop, theater and contemporary dance with dazzlingmoments of pure dance vitality. One of the most anticipated debuts of the season. The annual LGBTQ Festival returns to New York for its 37th edition featuring premieres and unique stories of identity. Among them, a unique trans coming of age story, the acclaimed Mexican documentary “NIÑXS” making its East Coast debut. Kani Lapuerta’s bold and sensitive debut feature paints a canvas of identity, acceptance and empathy through an eight-year journey, capturing the challenges and joy of growing up trans in a small community.The feature film will screen in person on October 16 at 6:45pm followed by a Q&A at the Nitehawk Prospect Park and will also be available to stream online from October 9–21.INFO: https://newfest.org/events/ninxs/
