“SNOWPIERCER” ****
Prepare yourself for the most thrilling ride of this Summer. And it takes place aboard a train continuously running around the globe. Hollywood could have made it, but without the originality of a mastery and visionary director. The conductor of this exhilarating and extremely violent trip is South Korean Bong Joon-Ho, who previously amused audiences with “The Host” and “Mother”, and now, targeting wider audiences gathered a bunch of renowned actors, Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell and John Hurt to co-star this sci-fi epic. In a dark and cold atmosphere it all begins in July 2014, when a global-warming experiment left Earth covered with snow killing the human race. Those who survived are the passengers of the gigantic train, and this locomotive becomes the core of the story, for its incredible architecture built by a mysterious Mr. Wilford. The train is divided in two parts, the front where the engine is located, and the tail, where a crowd of lower class people are trying to figure out how to escape from the unjust system. Chris Evans and Jamie Bell are the leaders of their revolt making their way through the cars moving towards the front. On the way, the spectacular and imaginative interior look on the train, becomes an amazing journey, with astonishing and never-seen visual aesthetic. The sense of sarcasm is impregnated on the narrative, as the director creates a new world on the train, depicting social issues without giving a speech: drug addicts, child abuse, the reliability of humans toward technology, overpopulation, awareness of emotions, and the struggle of the less fortunate amidst a wealthy empire. Joon-Ho had proved himself as a compromising mystery teller, and this time he demonstrates commanding techniques with ultra cool fights, gunshots disputes and infuriating battles between both sides on the train. Tilda Swinton scores another memorable role of her career, as Mason, the speaker for Mr. Wilford, responsible for irreverent dialogs, creating the most hilarious moments in the film. The director also gets credits for the screenplay he wrote. It’s rare to see such brilliant puzzles like this one, leaving pieces behind and then emerging the unexpected, as it collects the clues and solves the mysteries. A mind-blowing experience that will please art house lovers, Martial Arts fans, Tarantino followers and audiences with a taste for sarcasm. Explosive!
