@New York African Diaspora Film Festival
The 29th edition of the diverse and multi ethnic African Diaspora Film Festival held in various venues in New York City kicks off tonight with the World Premiere of the modern comedy “The Sleeping Negro”(photo) directed by Skinner Myers. The 2021 Festival continues next week and runs through December 12th with special presentations and live screenings of the most exciting and entertaining films exploring the Black lifestyle in varied cultures. Brazilian films are represented by a few must-see titles, including nightly screenings of the action-fueled historical thriller “Marighella”, 2021 box-office hit that continues to attract audiences in Brazil; The Festival will also offer Online Viewing of all films: Director Daniel Filho’s latest erotic crime mystery “The Silence of the Rain” starring Lazaro Ramos and Claudia Abreu; the polemic socio-political activism teen drama “A Bruddah’s Mind”, and “Doutor Gama”, the latest in accomplished director Jeferson De’s biographical exploration on Black Brazilian revolutionaries who tragically fought for their freedom and justice. The worldwide famous ensemble band EARTH, WIND & FIRE is considered one of the most accomplished and funkiest bands of all time, responsible for well-known hits such as “After the Love Has Gone”, “Sing A Song” and “Shining Star”. Blending special tunes that defined them as the musical superstar representation of Black Power and Culture, they deliver amazing compositions with influences on African roots, reggae, jazz, funk, blues, R&B, Gospel and deep soul, making everyone dance and rejoice. The celebrated annual Film series “The Contenders” is now in progress at MoMA (11 West 53rd Street). Through January 22 the Museum’s Film Department will screen a prestigious selection of the most remarkable and efficient films of the year, in its Best of the Year showcase, a perfect place to pick your favorites during this busy Awards Season. Actors and directors will be in attendance to discuss their projects with the audience in intimate conversations.
