As part of its annual Jazz series, showcasing the freshest and hottest instrumentalists in the world, Miller Theater at Columbia University (2960 Broadway) presents the debut of trumpeter and bandleader Sean Jones performing originals and standards. Jones gained the spotlight here and internationally after joining the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as the leading trumpeter. Now he leads the ensemble Sean Jones Quartet, playing alonside Luques Curtis, bass, Orrin Evans, piano and drummer Koleby Roystons. Saturday, March 4 at 8pm, Tickets start at $20. @The Newark Museum

Founded by Ivo Araujo, the worldwide acclaimed entertainment group Manhattan Samba School will lead a night displaying the rhythms, colors and traditions of Brazilian Carnaval at The Newark Museum, 48 Washington Street. Celebrating the largest and most vibrant Latin American popular dancing/singing festival, the event presents its varied styles featuring host Edmara, the Baiana, DJ Ligia playing classics and hits, Frevo Dance by artist, dancer and athlete Zennbrazil, the incomparable energy of Axe rising star Fre Lima, Malayka’s Capoeira group, and others. Among the fun activities, there will be Mask painting contest, Face Painting for all, dance instructions, Giveaways, as well as different sets of Samba. Galleries will be open for visitors, including the family-attractive, visually-enhancing “Animal Kingdom”, while vendors will offer art and savors from Brazil. Co-curated by Roger Costa. Free. The annual international documentary festival DOC Fortnight returns for its 22nd edition featuring the boldest, most inventive and narrative defying non-fiction films and experimentals from several countries in the globe. Among this year’s selection, organized by Sophie Cavoulacos, MoMA (11 West 53rd Street) will screen 15 features and 8 shorts, including China’s “A Long Journey Home” directed by Wenqian Zhang (pic.), France’s “Our Body” by Claire Simon, the Brazilian co-production “It Is Night in America” by Ana Vaz, screening alonside Rodrigo Ribeiro-Andrade’s short “Solmatalua” and Norway’s “The Eclipse” directed by Natasa Urban. On Thursday, March 2nd, fans of folk-rock will delight themselves with the musical special “The Simon & Garfunkel Story”, a gorgeous, immersive theatrical concert combining archive footage and live band. Recreating key moments in the lives of its leaders, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, the spectacle brings hits such as “Mrs. Robinson” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” while venturing through their journey as band and influencers of many generations. The most celebrated dance venue in Manhattan, The Joyce Theater, 175 8th Avenue, will host two must-see shows in the upcoming weeks. From February 21-25, the Los Angeles-based, electrifying Versa-Style Dance Company presents their unique blend of street dance, popping, locking, hip hop and others in “Freemind Freestyle”, a new work exploring freedom in dance. And starting February 28 for a two-week special engagement, Tel Aviv’s Batsheva Dance Company returns with “Hora” an intense, futuristic work choreographed by Ohad Naharin and set to electronic music by internationally-renowned composer Isao Tomita.
