Founded by Roger Costa, the NY Brazilian Film Series (Fall edition) took place last Sunday, November 17 at Cinema Village, the iconic indie/arthouse movie venue in Manhattan gathering over 150 people in a unique multi-cultural celebration of Brazilian culture.
The award-winning documentary “Belchior-Just a Wild Heart” directed by Camilo Cavalcante and Natalia Dias had its NY Premiere there, collecting praises and emotional reactions from the audience.
In its second edition this year, the event screens films in May and November, the NYBFS featured a diverse line of performances including two dance shows, two live music sets, an art show and a book release.
Singer/Artist Nono Charlie and multi-talented musician and composer Henrique Marliere opened the evening with a special Tribute to Belchior. While audiences reached out to their caipirinhas and coxinhas (the traditional and popular Brazilian drink and snack), they were treated to tunes such as “Como Nossos Pais” and “Mucuripe”. Hosted by actor, comedian and TV Reporter Amadeu Maya, the event continued with the first dance performance of the night led by Lee Rodrigues and Anderson Pinto. They danced to a classic samba song with moves inspired by the bohemian style of Belchior’s compositions.
Director Camilo Cavalcante sent a pre-recorded special message to the audience, and after the film, author Mirian Carlech was interviewed on stage about the release of her book “Spike, A Four Legged-Angel”- a memoir about her healing process and connection to her beloved pet.
Lebanese/Brazilian/American artist and designer Tarik Mendes presented a live show featuring a Brazilian-inspired canvas and Batala NY the electrifying female led-percussion group, closed up the evening with some Afro-Bahia beats- they were joined by the pair of dancers who performed a Samba Show that put everyone to dance together.
Created to educate, connect, promote and preserve Brazilian culture, the NY Brazilian Film Series returns in May 2025.
