Featuring A Tribute to Tom Jobim, the benefit concert for Instituto Dara presents singer/composer and Jobim’s friend, Danilo Caymmi and Platinum-selling Jazz singer Stacy Kent at the historic music venue The Town Hall, (123 43rd Street, Times Square) on Saturday April 12 at 7pm.
Jobim was responsible for making Bossa Nova popular around the globe and especially in the US where it exchanged influences on jazz music and gained partners such as Sinatra and other icons. This concert honors the 30th anniversary of his death with musicians Stacey Kent (vocals), Danilo Caymmi (vocals), Jim Tomlinson (sax), Flavio Mendes (acoustic guitar), Annalissia Cecilia Martinez-Villavicencio (cello), and Aaron Irwin (flute). Currently touring the country along with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the stunning Brazilian dancer Dandara Veiga is set to perform a live solo at the 3rd NY Brazilian Film Series on Sunday May 18th at 5pm at Cinema Village, 22 East 12th Street, Manhattan, NYC. Dandara is a classical trained, athletic and versatile dancer who has danced for Ballet Hispanico and now is a member of Alvin Ailey.
She will perform an original piece created for the event and inspired by the work of singer/composer Luiz Melodia. Danced to live music performed by percussionist Everton Isidoro. The NYBFS will screen the North American Premiere of “Luiz Melodia-Within the Heart of Brazil”. Ticket $22 includes welcome drinks and pastries. On Friday, April 18, the Museum of the Moving (MOMI, 36-01 35 Ave, Astoria, Queens) opens the mega exhibition MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, in advance of the upcoming release of the eighth film in the series, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE—The Final Reckoning.
The exhibition will gather materials, props and other curiosities from all the films in the series, organized by film. It will introduce to visitors the talent of star and producer Tom Cruise’s exceptional commitment to practical stunt work, and explore how the series combines technical ingenuity, personal discipline, and artistic commitment, all in service of storytelling, character development, and performance.
