SUMMER FAREWELL

Final weeks of Summer, so don’t let it go without making the most fun of it. Besides offering a large green-acre-area to rest, medidate, picnic and gather the loved ones, Governors Island is also place for some exciting artistic events. And the best: they are free. In partnership with Film at Lincoln Center, the Island (take the Ferry on 10 South Street, Lower Manhattan) will host its annual Free Outdoor Film Screening series on Friday, August 11th. The event kicks off at 7pm with DJ music followed by the screening of “Bend It Like Beckham”, the amusing British-Indian soccer-coming-of-age comedy, at 8:30pm. On Saturday, August 12 visitors will have the chance to explore artist Paola Fernanda Guzman Figueroa’s immersive durational performance “Time Travel”, which follows her in an intimate trajectory through the Island, pushing an Aquarium and questioning themes such as longing, desire and past feelings. @SummerStage Central Park

Grammy winner Brazilian rapper, composer and film star Emicida will perform a special concert as part of CityParks Foundation’s hyper cool program Summer Stage. Taking place in Central Park and presented in association with Inffinito New York Brazilian Film Festival, the event also features sounds from Goyo, the singer and producer of Colombian band ChocQuibTown, the “caliente” fusion of salsa, reggae and hip-hop, and the screening of the Brazilian documentary “AmarElo: It’s All for Yesterday” depicting Emicida’s life and ascension as well as a backstage insight of his latest tour. There will also be a dance performance in collaboration with Works & Process and the all-female members of Hip-Hop Dance Collective (LDC). Sunday, September 3 starting at 6pm. Free. Final days to discover enthusiastic world music, dance events and workshops offered by Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City free series. On Wednesday, August 9 at 8pm, DJ and Producer J.Period gathers strong names of Hip Hop such as Rakim, Big Daddy Kane and other special guests for a live mixtape entitled “Gods & Kings Edition”, in celebration of Hip Hop week which turns 50 years. On Thursday at 7pm the stage will be taken by the Ladies of Hip-Hop Dance Collective, shared with DJ’s, dance intructions and live music. On Friday, at 10pm the Silent Disco series spins Salsa, Hip Hop and Latin helmed by DJ Spinna and DJ Rashida, and on Saturday at 8pm, Rakim and Rhapsody gather special guests for a Summer’s farewell fueled with more hip hop. @Newark City Parks

The Summer events promoted by the City of Newark and organized by DJ, music producer and cultural activist Marcy DePina continues to highlight emerging local and international artists with a festive line-up taking place in various parks throughout Brick City.  On Friday, August 11th at 7pm Military Park hosts an evening of Jazz with WBGO Jazz and Jokes hosted by Bob Sumner. On Saturday, 4pm-9pm PBNJ Block Party will offer music, live performances, drinks and local vendors at Mulberry Commons. On Sunday choose from Yoga and Afrobeats at The Yellow Sticks’ Riverfront Park with instructor Ty Daye from 11am to 1pm, or visit the Harriet Tubman Square for an electrifying sample of the best in drum music, as The People’s Drum Circle takes place from midday to 2pm. Gathering some of the most exciting musical talents of our era, the annual free concert series Horizon Sounds of the City continues to promote Thursday’s hottest party in Newark. On August 10th at 6pm, iconic MC Kurtis Blow will perform a special Hip Hop celebration with tunes such as  “Christmas Rappin’,” “The Breaks,” “Basketball” and “If I Ruled the World” . Easily known as one of the “founding fathers of hip hop”, Kurtis is an influential voice to the movement and a brilliant musical-stylist who blends old school and contemporary with groundbreaking results.
